How much does a driving instructor earn?

An average driving instructor will earn mouth watering income working full time, not bad compared to your average office job!

As your own boss you could earn more working longer hours or less working part time or around another job, the choice is yours.

Being a Driving Instructor won’t just give you a job, it will give you a vocation that offers you years of job satisfaction and flexibility.

So now you know “how much does a driving instructor earn?” I guess next you want to know… How can I become a driving instructor?

AS A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR (ADI) CAN BE VERY REWARDING: YOU’LL BE HELPING PEOPLE LEARN AN IMPORTANT SKILL FOR LIFE.

You’ll be working with a variety of people, so you’ll need good people skills as well as;

  • Patience and understanding
  • A thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of driving
  • An ability to teach
  • Awareness of changes in the regulations for driving tests, as well as driving instruction
  • Business sense.

Applicants to become a driving instructor must first obtain a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) through the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) contractor, Capita Recruitment Vetting Service (CRVS).

You must have held a full licence for at least three years before you can begin the ADI testing process (a foreign or automatic licence can count toward the three years).

The DVSA requires you to pass three driving instructor exams – which we will discuss in more detail below – and read a vehicle number plate from a distance of at least 27.5 metres (90 feet).

You are unlikely to have your application affected if your licence has penalty points (generally four maximum) and those points already spent will not be counted. But you must not have been disqualified from driving during the last four years, not even for one day.

There are three ADI exams that candidates must pass in order to become a driving instructor.

We provide all the information and materials you need to pass these tests in our driving instructor training course.

ADI TEST PART1

First, you must pass the theory test and then a hazard perception test in order to be an ADI.

The theory test consists of 100 multiple choice questions. There are four bands within the test, and each band requires a score of 80% to pass. You have 1.5 hours to complete the test, and you need an overall pass mark of 85% to pass.

The hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips, and the pass mark is 57 out of 75. You will have 20 minutes to complete the hazard perception.

Both parts of the test each and can be retaken as many times as necessary.

As part of our training, we cover the ADI theory and hazard perception sections via in-class instruction and reading materials.

ADI TEST PART 2

Second, a driving and eyesight test is conducted by a Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency Supervising Examiner and lasts approximately one hour.

You will have to demonstrate that you are capable of driving and managing the car safely and under control. You cannot commit more than six minor or one serious fault.

This test and can be taken up to three times.

Our tailored training packages are designed to fit around your other work commitments, so that you can thoroughly prepare for part two of your ADI test.

On part two, we will use our in-car recording system so that you can review your lessons at home.

ADI TEST PART 3

The third test, the ability to teach learner drivers, is administered by a DVSA Supervising Examiner and lasts about an hour.

The examiner will role play the role of a learner driver and you’ll be marked for how you identify and correct mistakes.

The test and can be taken up to three times.

Our flexible ADI course is designed to fit around your other work commitments and our in-car recording system allows you to review your training from home.
